Great Britain has been one of the dominating players in human history and there are quite a few remains left. There are a large amount of prehistoric sites to well-preserved medieval towns and tons of castles and monuments from its age of glory.

Great Britain as we know it now has only existed since the year 1707, when England, Wales and Scotland were really united. Ireland joined the union in 1801. In 1921, part of Ireland voted for becoming independent and only Northern Ireland stayed within the United Kingdom.

More than 60 million people live in Great Britain, as of July 2005, which almost 80% in England (which is makes up for only over 50% of the surface). 9% is living in Scotland (with a third of the area), 3% in Northern Ireland and 5% in Wales.

London is the capital and biggest city where in some parts (for example in the neighborhoods of Chelsea and Kensington, the population density is even surpassing 13,000 people per square kilometer.
